NEW GLASGOW - Fraser Matheson, 85, of New Glasgow, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 16, 2010, in Glen Haven Manor.
Born in New Glasgow, November 11, 1925, he was a son of the late John and Annie Mae (MacLean) Matheson of Trenton.
Fraser is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sylvia (Wadden), their children, Alan, Sandra and Susan, grandchildren Erin and Andrew Matheson, daughter-in-law Laura (Yerxa) Matheson and numerous nieces and nephews.
His brother Hugh Matheson predeceased Fraser.
He was educated in Trenton and received his machinist trade in the Halifax Ship Yards where he worked until his return to Maritime Steel, New Glasgow. In 1962 Fraser began employment with the Sobey Company as the first manager of the Heather Bowling Lanes. He later transferred to Sobey's Head Office, Stellarton, to work within their various divisions of real estate, property management and store development, until his retirement in 1989. Fraser was the oldest living Past Master of Doric Lodge No. 91, Trenton, receiving his 55-year jewel in February 2009. He was a member of Mount Lebanon Chapter No. 14, Malta Preceptory and Philae Shriners. Fraser was a faithful member of St. George's Anglican Church, having served as warden. He was a 50-year member of the New Glasgow Gyro Club.
Visitation will be held Sunday, December 19, 7-9 p.m. and Monday, December 20, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Avenue, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 21 at 2 p.m. from St. George's Anglican Church with Rev. Aidan Kingsbury officiating. Burial will be in the Lorne Street Cemetery at a later date.
Family flowers only. Donations in Fraser's memory may be made to St George's Anglican Church or Glen Haven Manor.
Doric Masonic Lodge No. 91 will meet at the funeral home at 6:45 p.m. Sunday to conduct their service.
The family wishes to extend thanks to Dr. MacLean and Dr. Forbes for their care and to the exceptional staff of 2N, Glen Haven Manor for the wonderful care provided to Fraser during these past 18 months. Fraser was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and uncle, always putting family first and helpful to others. Fraser will be sadly missed and live on in our hearts forever.
