The death of Fred Smith of Saint John, husband of Iona (Friars) Smith, occurred Saturday, December 18, 2010, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John on May 7, 1938, he was the youngest son of the late Frederick and Margaret (Hawkes) Smith. Fred was a firefighter for 31 years with the Saint John Fire Department, retiring as Captain. In his younger years, Fred enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. He had many fond memories of his time spent with family and friends at his cottage on the Kingston Peninsula "Freddie Buck Lodge." Besides his loving wife of 53 years, Iona, Fred is also survived by his three children, Susan Waddell (Michael), Fred Jr. (Lorrie Beechum), and Cathy Smith (Calvin Gilliland) all of the Kingston Peninsula; one sister, Joy Peacock of East Riverside, NB; one brother, Maxwell Smith ( Della) of ON; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; sister-in-law, Georgie Stein of Saint John; several nieces and nephews. Fred was predeceased by three brothers, Austin, Joffre and Vincent Smith.
Resting at Reid's Funeral Home, 1063 Hampton, (506) 832-5541, with visitation on Monday from 7 to 9pm and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. A funeral service will be held from the chapel of Reid's Funeral Home, on Wednesday, December 22, 2010, at 1:30PM. Interment will take place in Trinity Cemetery, Kingston, in the spring.
