HORSNELL, John Russell - 99, Aylesford, Kings Co., passed away on Tuesday, December 14, 2010, in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor. Born on the family farm in Weston, Kings Co., he was a son of the late G. Stailing and Addie (Sanford) Horsnell. John attended school in Weston, and farmed with his father, later taking over the farm. He was a good stewart of the land, and remained interested in farming issues all of his life. John was a member of the N.S. Fruit Growers Association. As a young man he started a trucking business, which developed into a fleet of trucks carrying milk from Valley farms to Farmers Dairy in Halifax. John was very active in community affairs, and always concerned about his neighbours and friends. Many times he helped people who were in difficulty, whether with food, loans of equipment or gifts. John had been a trustee of the local school and community centre. He was an honourary life member of the High Tide Drifters Camping Club and he loved the companionship of campers as they shared times in his campground, "John's Place", in Weston. John enjoyed playing cards and all social events. He was a member of the Aylesford Baptist Church. Politics was a passion, and he was a life-long Liberal. His first love was always for his family, for the people who worked for him and for the people in his community. He is survived by his daughter, Bette and son-in-law, Glenn Kelly, Aylesford; grandson, Matthew Brown, Vancouver, B.C. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Muriel I. (Saunders); daughter, Janet Brown; sisters, Bertha Horsnell; Areta Sturk. Visitation for Mr. Horsnell was held from 7-9 p.m., Sunday, December 19, in Serenity Lindsay Funeral Home, 192 Commercial St., Berwick, N.S., B0P 1E0, (902-538-9900), from where the funeral service took place at 2 p.m., Monday, December 20. Rev. Leon Langille officiated. A private Interment Service took place prior to the service. Memorial donations may be made to the Weston Community Centre or to a charity of your choice.
