It is with great sorrow that we regret to announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother Marie Cecilia (Hall) Deguast at Seavie Manor, Glace Bay, Friday, June 26, 2009.
Born in Main-a-Dieu, Aug. 29, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Edward Hall and the late Sarah Lathigee Hall Shaw. She was one of nine children who grew up in Main-a-Dieu. Her youngest brother Joseph was born to Sarah and Joseph Shaw from a second marriage, he is the last surviving member of the family.
After graduating from high school and attending business college, she worked for Eatons for a number of years. She was very active in the home and school association and local politics, during her child rearing years, and gave tirelessly to friends and neighbours with her assistance whenever needed.
In her middle years she did a nurses aid program through the Red Cross, loved it and worked as an aid for the next 20 years at the General Hospital in Glace Bay until she retired in 1992 at age 65.
From 2003 she lived her remaining years at Seaview Manor where s he came to feel at home.
Marie is survived by her six children, Gary (Gail), Daryl, Brian (Dyan), Andre (Brenda), Ronda (Bob), Denise (Derek); 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Joseph Shaw (Connie) and many loved nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 33 years, Ronald A. Degaust in 1982. She was also predeceased by her sisters, Mary and Elizabeth ‘Betty’, brothers, John, Edward, John, Michael and Reggie, and stepfather, Joseph Shaw.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Degaust will be held at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Tuesday, June 30 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 1 at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Church with Fr. Conrad Edwards officiating. Burial to follow at St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
Due to severe environmental sensitivities of several family members, please refrain from wearing any scented products.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimers Society or a charity of choice.
She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who shared her love lavishly. She takes our love with her. Go with God.
