Jim went to his eternal home in peace on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, at the Glace Bay Hospital.
A lifelong resident of Glace Bay, Jim was the son of the late Patrick Gregory and Anne (Petrie) O'Keefe.
After graduating from St. Anne's High School, Jim was employed in the coal industry for over 40 years starting with the Dominion Coal Company and then with Devco in the accounts payable department. Jim was an avid reader, enjoyed walking and traveling. As a young man, Jim served as a Boy Scout leader for several years. He was a Third Degree Member of Council 1953 Knights of Columbus.
Jim had a deep faith and served his church at St Anne's parish as usher in earlier years, then as Eucharistic minister, lector, and collections recorder. He also served on Children's Liturgy and various other committees and was happy to receive his five-year diploma in religious education.
He was a former member of St. Anne's Men's Club and of the Atlantic Association of Spiritual Exercises Apostolate (AASEA), being Chair of the industrial area of Sydney for several years. In past years Jim also was very active in the Cursillo and Charismatic Renewal movements.
Jim is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jessie (MacNeil) O'Keefe; daughter, Rose Anne (Mike) Kennedy, New Waterford; sons, Terry (Amy), Port Morien, Tom (Veronica), Glace Bay, John (Alison), Halifax, Rod (Heather), Hampden, Maine; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Jim was predeceased by his sister Moira (1962), brother Joseph (2010) and brother Gregory, in infancy.
In honoring Jim's wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A Funeral Mass celebrating Jim's life will be held in St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay, on Thursday, Dece. 30 at 2 p.m., with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment will follow in the Parish Cemetery.
Prior to Mass, our family will be present to friends at 1 p.m. in the foyer of the church.
In lieu of flowers donations in Jim's Memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Cancer Society, Kidney Foundation, or the Palliative Care Society, according to his wishes.
