Joyce Theaker was born January 29, 1915 in Winnipeg, MB to Jessie and Edward (Ted) Davies. She passed away December 16, 2010 at the age of 95 at the Foyer St. Joseph Nursing Home in Pontiex, SK. She was raised on a farm near St. Boswell's and completed her Grade 12 by correspondence, then received her teaching degree at the Moose Jaw Normal School. She taught at the Trimworth and Glenview schools. She met her future husband at the Button farm and married Harvey Theaker on May 19, 1943. Shortly after their marriage Harvey was sent overseas to serve and sadly their first born son, Gary was stillborn while Harvey was at war. Then Joyce received word that Harvey had been badly injured and after a lengthy recovery he was sent home. Their second son Garth was born in 1952, but developed a virus and passed away at 5 months old. Through all these trials they remained strong and gracious. They moved to the farm near Pambrun in 1945 and spent many years teaching the Pambrun 4-H light horse club, impacting many young lives. They retired to Vanguard in 1985 as Harvey's health was failing and spent many good times playing cards and sharing coffee with neighbours. Joyce was a very active woman and walked a kilometer or more a day into her 90's. She lost Harvey on March 28, 1995. She had many healthy years after and spent lots of time with her sister-in-law Irene and other community ladies playing cards at the center and sharing coffee. Joyce moved to the Foyer in 2008, and was treated like family by the caring staff. She was predeceased by her father in 1945 and her mother Jessie in 1978, and her only brother Sinclair in 1997. Then Irene passed away on July 1, 2009. She is survived by her sister-in-law Dorothy Davies of Moose Jaw. She was like an Auntie or Grandma to so many in the Pambrun/Vanguard area and was a faithful member of the United Church. She was a wonderful host, a great baker, and did amazing crochet work, winning various awards for it. She will be sadly missed by many friends and neighbours, the staff at the Foyer, who loved her witty sense of humour and feisty spirit, and those whose lives she so greatly impacted. A memorial service was held on Friday, December 31, 2010 at 1:00 pm from the Vanguard United Church with Intern Minister Richard Bowley officiating. The organist was Dorothy Saunderson with David Pollard leading the hymns. A tribute to Joyce was given by Melody Janzen. Bob Burns and Rodney Gamble acted as ushers. Urn Bearers were Jeff and Jan Hornung and Albert and Melody Janzen. Interment was at Pambrun cemetery. In her memory donations can be left to the Van-Pam pool or the Vanguard United Church.
