TRENTON - Johannah Abigail (Dort) Lawless, formerly of MacLaren Ave., Trenton, passed away Monday, January 3, 2011, in Stellarton.
Born February 3, 1921, at home in Halfway Cove, Guysborough County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Nellie (George) Dort.
She was a former member of Saint James Anglican Church, and former Sunday school teacher and choir member.
Having married and moved to Trenton, she became a member of Saint Augustine's Church where she was a member of the Council, a choir member, Sunday school teacher and member of the Leslie Guild and Sanctuary Guild. She was a Synod Delegate and served as Secretary/Treasurer. Johannah worked at the Hawker Siddeley plant in the X-Ray Department and Stores. She received an honorary Gold Card for her services as treasurer of the United Steelworkers of America.
Johannah loved to dance and play cards but her passion was knitting and her flowers. She loved to travel and enjoyed her trip overseas and her many winters down south in Texas.
Johannah was a volunteer at Glen Haven Nursing Home in the recreational and feeding program for many years.
Due to ill health, she moved to Stellarton and became a member of Christ Church.
She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Nellie, husband, Jim and two brothers, Vernon and Havelock.
She is survived by her three children, Douglas (Dorothy), New Glasgow; Russell (Maureen), Havelock, Ont.; Barbara (John) Russell, Stellarton, with whom Johannah resided; and her brothers, Russell (Shirley), Westville; Tom (Gloria), New Glasgow; sister-in-law, Marion, Sylvester. She leaves five grandchildren, one step-granddaughter; nine great-grandchildren, two step great-granddaughters.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, Trenton. Funeral service 2 p.m. Friday in Christ Anglican Church Stellarton, with Rev. Aidan Kingsbury, Archdeacon Peter Armstrong and Rev. Bill White officiating. Reception will follow in Christ Church Hall. Johannah will be laid to rest beside her husband at Heatherdale Memorial Gardens at a later date. Family flowers only please. Donations in her memory may be made to Christ Anglican Church Stellarton, Canadian Cancer Society, VON, or the Palliative Care Unit, Aberdeen Hospital. Condolences at: www.rhporter.ca
