O'DELL - Robert Milton O'Dell (Milt) was born on Sept. 14, 1931 near Kenaston, Saskatchewan. He grew up on the family farm NW of Kenaston, and attended the nearby Rainbow School. At the age of 16 Milt left home, and he and his friend worked on various Saskatchewan farms eventually making their way into Alberta to work in the oil industry. Milt became a certified pipeline welder and one of his proudest accomplishments was working on an aluminum pipeline which required a specialized type of welding. He loved this work, and gave it his best, which was his usual! His motto was, "If a job is worth doing, do it right!" In 1954 he married his sweetheart, Gertrude Braun. They moved to Edmonton for a year, then to Drayton Valley. They lived in a very small house trailer that Milt had built from scratch...in his "spare" time, after working long, hard hours on the pipeline. During the next few years, three daughters were born to them. In 1962, Milt moved his family to Pennant where he started farming rented land and then purchased land near Success. He still had a passion for welding and in the mid 60's he partnered with his brother Walter to open O'Dell Brothers Welding. In 1969, Milt and Gert built their home on the land by Success, where they worked hard to build up the beautiful yard you see today. Connie, the youngest of their daughters arrived in 1972. Milt continued to farm until 1991, when he semi retired. He kept the grass land and sold the hay from it. A family trip to Disneyland in 1976 started their love of travel...Florida, Hawaii, Costa Rica and many trips to Mexico. The family's recent trip to the Maritimes in June 2010 was truly a highlight in Milt's life. He, Gert, and the four girls toured Nova Scotia and P.E.I. and they had the best time ever. Lobster was Milt's usual request at the restaurants. Two months later Milt and Gert purchased a motor home and spent one glorious month visiting family and friends. Milt enjoyed being involved in the community. Part of this community involvement included lots of time socializing at Coffee Row in Success. Milt spent several years in the CB club, he was an long-time Eagle member, a 4-H leader, one of the founding members of the Wheatland Conservation Area, a Swift Current EMO volunteer and a very active member of the Success Community Hall Board. Milt was a genuine people person. He loved meeting new people and was always ready to help anyone. You only had to call Milt once and he would say, "I'll be right there;" and he was. Milt's grandchildren really loved, admired and looked up to their Grandpa Milt. He was a real Dad to his sons-in-law, a true father to his four girls and an authentic friend to all. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him. Milton is survived by his loving wife, Gertrude; daughters: Rhonda (Monte) Haroldson, Kim O'Dell (Cal Weishaar), Teresa (Darwin) Johnsgaard and Connie (Don) Kornelson; 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, 2 sisters and 4 brothers. He was predeceased by his parents, Alice and Leonard O'Dell, and his brother-in-law Joseph Schnurer. In Milt's memory, donations may be made to the Success Hall. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, Sask.
