Irene Marjorie Harmer, in her 103rd year, went to her Heavenly rest on Friday, January 7, 2011. Formerly of Grandview Drive and Church Court, Moncton, she spent her last years at McNair Manor on Beechwood Avenue, Moncton. Born in Moncton, she was the daughter of the late Elijah Thompson of Dundas and Alice Sarah Thompson (Steeves) of Dawson Settlement. Irene, at the time of her death, was the longest serving member of First Moncton Baptist Church, having joined the church through baptism in 1923 - a total of 88 years. She was a member of the Kumtucks Class and served for a time as Church Treasurer, the only woman to have held that position. When the Kenneth Spencer Home opened in 1973, she was asked to organize an Auxiliary and Boutique for the benefit of the residents. She was the first President of the Auxiliary and later, Honorary President. While living at Church Court, Irene was instrumental in organizing activities for the residents. Irene was an ardent curler, involved in championship play, and at one time was President of the Beaver Ladies Curling Club. She was the last surviving member of her family, having been predeceased by brothers, Gordon, Earnest, Blair; sisters, Julia (Hiltz), Verna (Stultz), Maizie (Carter), Blanche (MacKiel). She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Harmer in 1971. She leaves to mourn nieces and nephews, including Joyce Tingley (Rupert), with whom she had a special relationship and a stepdaughter, Ada Clarke.
Visitation at Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995), Sunday from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Funeral Service at First Moncton Baptist Church, Monday January 10, 2011, 1:30 pm, Rev. Dr. Richard Jackson officiating. Reception to follow in the Church Vestry. Interment, Elmwood Cemetery. Special thanks to the people of McNair Manor for the wonderful care they gave Irene in her final years of life.
