Thelma Verret

VERRET - Thelma Isabella Verret (nee Colbow) passed away peacefully in the early hours of January 4, 2011, while in the care of the Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current, SK. She was 86 years old. Thelma trained at the Regina General Hospital and was a dedicated R.N. from 1947 to 1989, and head nurse for many years, as well as a charter member of the Saskatchewan Union of Nurses. Her other main passion was working with the Catholic Women's League of Canada. Her 50 years of faithful service included many convenorships, a term as president, and the initiation of the Palliser bingos. She was also diocesan president during her 12 years at that level. Thelma was well informed - and often opinionated - on news and current events, and was a staunch supporter of Pro-Life and all social justice issues. A committed volunteer, she canvassed for various charities, worked bingos, helped with Meals-on-Wheels and the Miracle Quilters and made numerous afghans for local raffles. Thelma was an avid knitter, and loved to crochet and do crafts, often while watching Coronation Street. She enjoyed her roses and garden, and participated with gusto in all manner of family games. Thelma was born on November 13, 1924 in Khedive, SK, and raised in the "Dirty 30s", the youngest of 9 siblings. She is predeceased by brothers Lewis, Fred, Earl and Arthur, and sisters Nellie, Agnes and Emmaline (who died at age two). She is survived by her sister Ida, and sisters-in-law Annie, Irene and Lottie. Married to Fernand Rene Verret of Lac Pelletier, Thelma was widowed in 1978. Her daughter Claire resides in Swift Current, while son Rene (Laurel) lives in Edmonton. Youngest daughter Jeannine (Marvin) Milos lives in Balgonie, SK. Thelma took great pleasure in her four grandchildren, Rene's sons Sean (Tanya) and Ryan, and Jeannine's daughters Christine (Darcy) Schoenroth and Kayla. Prayers were led by Vivian Bosch on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 7:00 P.M. from the Chapel of Warren's Funeral Home. The Funeral Service was held Friday, January 7, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Christ the Redeemer Roman Catholic Church in Swift Current, with Father James Owolagba officiating. The Interment at Memory Gardens Cemetery will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank all those who assisted in any way in the celebration of Thelma's life. Thanks also to the dedicated and caring nurses of the renal dialysis unite at the Cypress Regional Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Kidney Foundation of Canada would be appreciated. Warren's Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
