1926 - 2011 - Bertha Rose "Byrdie" Walls, 84 of Blackville, NB, passed away peacefully at her home Sunday, January 9th, 2011. She was born in Quarryville on September 27th, 1926 daughter of the late George and Greta (Gerrish) Touchie and the wife of the late Eric H. Walls of Blackville. Byrdie was a graduate of the Miramichi Hospital School of Nursing. Her career was spent working as a dedicated RN at the Miramichi Hospital, the Newcastle Medical Clinic and as a well-loved nurse in her community. Following her husband's death she managed their Service Station and Contracting Business. Byrdie was a member of the Blackville St. Andrew's United Church, the UCW, the Orange Lodge, the Women's Liberal Association, the Blackville Senior Citizens, the Miramichi Hospital School of Nursing Alumni and Retired Nurses Association. She loved to fly fish. Her life was guided by her spiritual beliefs, strong will and genuine spirit. Her worldly travels and life's experiences were an inspiration to all but most importantly to her family whom she loved and guided with her strong values to ensure each one did their best-not just to take from life but to give back. Byrdie is survived by: two daughters: Kathy Campbell (Earl); Carol Ann Underhill (Kevin) all of Miramichi, NB; one son in law: Garth Underhill of Blackville, NB; half brother: Glen Gerrish (Betty) of Derby, NB; grandchildren: Adem and Jana Campbell, Jillian and Rose Ann Underhill, Melissa and Stefanie Underhill. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her beloved husband Eric and her cherished daughter: Greta Gaye Underhill.
The family will receive visitors at the St. Andrew's United Church Hall, Blackville, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. The funeral service will be held from St. Andrew's United Church, Blackville on Friday, January 14, 2011 at 2 PM with Rev. Penny Postlewaithe and Dean Lawrence officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery later in the spring.
