We regret to announce the passing of John Joseph MacKinnon, age 96, of Glace Bay. John passed away Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011, at New Waterford Heights.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Michael and Catherine (Morrison) MacKinnon. John was a member of St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay. He was employed with Devco in the engineering department retiring in 1980 after many years of service.
Father died peacefully and quietly as he lived.
John is survived by his wife, Helen (Fielding) MacKinnon; daughters, Angela Moorer, Birmingham, Alabama, Ellen (David) Thomey, Sydney; cherished grandchildren, Mitchell, John and Wyatt Moorer, Catherine and Angela Thomey. Also surviving are nieces and nephews.
John was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Besides his parents, John was predeceased by sisters, Agnes, Sadie, Mary, brothers, Ronald and Gregory, John and Jimmie.
Visitation for John MacKinnon will be held Friday 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
