Grief stricken and heart broken we announce the passing of our dad. At the age of 83 he passed away Jan. 12, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Mill Creek, on Dec. 21, 1927, he was the son of the late August and Florence (Boutilier) Roland.
He was a loving, caring and hard working father, father-in-law, grandfather, husband, brother, brother-in-law and friend. He worked in the Beaver Coal Mine as well as the Broughton Coal Mine for several years. He drove the school bus, ran an Irving service center in Dominion, drove trucks, operated a back hoe and did carpentry work.
There wasn't much that dad couldn't do. Being a very kind man he would do all he could to help those in need. He lived to fish with his brothers and friends and went every chance he got. Dad also loved to hunt in his healthier days. He was fun to be with and a great storyteller. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in North Sydney.
He is survived by his two daughters, Shirley Parsons, Halifax, Dale (Philip) McQueen, Broughton Road; six grandchildren, Susan, Heather, Sharon, Troy, Deana and Justin, all of Halifax, Montreal, and British Columbia; 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Marie MacMullin, Truro, Annie Fitzgerald, Mill Creek; two brothers, Wes (Irene) Roland, Glace Bay, George (Helen) David, Sydney; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Wendell was predeceased just a short time ago on Nov. 3, 2010, by his wife and best friend, Helen (Rogers) Roland, son-in-law, Melvin Parsons, brother, Claude Wilson Roland and sister, Eileen Bonnar.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate Dad's life will be held at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 31 Peppett St., North Sydney, 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
Saying goodbye is very difficult because we love him and will miss him a great deal but he is sleeping peacefully now and we look forward to the promise of the resurrection morning. Good night Dad and have a good sleep.
