It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our father, Lorne Anderson, at the Glace Bay Hospital on Jan. 13, 2011.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Roderick and Mary (Beaton) Anderson. He resided in Coxheath for the past 50 years.
Growing up in Glace Bay he 'Gump' was an excellent athlete excelling in rugby and hockey. He would often regale; some would say challenge any and all about the purity of rugby as one of the few, if not the only sport, which promoted competition and sportsmanship.
Lorne will be sadly missed by his sons, Peter (Maureen), New Brunswick, Rod, Coxheath, Steve (Sheila), Howie Centre; daughters, Elaine (Madeline), Dartmouth, Diane Smith (Norm), Kathy Black (Joe), Rea Coady (Paul), all of Sydney River, Fran Kelloway (Derrick), Dartmouth. He is also survived by his sister, Tellie MacDonald, Seaview Manor, Glace Bay, formerly from North Sydney, and his 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, who affectionately called him Boo. Also left to mourn his passing are his nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends, especially his caring neighbors Heather, Ron and Joe.
Throughout his life Lorne loved animals and enjoyed their company both at his Coxheath home and at his summer home in Inverness. His kindness and compassion will be missed by his current pets, cats, Willnoah and Stach and especially his dog, Lucky.
Lorne was a veteran of the Second World War serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force at various bases in Canada.
A graduate of St. FX and McGill Universities, Lorne had a long and distinguished career in education. He was especially proud of being one of the original teachers at Riverview Rural High School. During his 30 years, all at RRHS, he was first and foremost a physical education teacher, but also served as vice principal, a coach, a school bus driver and an outdoor education instructor which he continued to do even after his retirement in 1980. He took great satisfaction and enjoyment exposing his students to building and spending nights in lean-tos and canoeing on the Margaree River.
Over his lifetime he made many lasting friendships with colleagues and he was very proud of his many students who kept in close contact with him over the years.
Lorne experienced many joys during his life; Inverness was a significant part of the family experience where he and Marie spent many wonderful summer days. He undertook numerous projects, which ranged from construction to gardening.
He had to be busy and as a talented handyman he was still doing his projects until very recently. He was always very physically active to the amazement of all who knew him and he loved to swim during the summer and cross-country ski during the winter. In addition to maintaining his physical wellbeing, he considered himself a crossword expert and was a lifelong hockey fan as well as following the fortunes of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marie, in 2002; his sisters, Frances (Broderick), Rea (Demont), Amour and his brother, Ross.
Lorne's family would like to thank Dr. James MacKillop for his many years of care and compassion. We would also like to thank the nurses and staff of the Glace Bay Hospital for their wonderful care during his final few days. We want to extend our thanks to Jennifer who attended Lorne during his last stay in hospital.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Society or the Palliative Care Services of the Cape Breton District Health Authority.
There will be no visitation at Lorne's request. All are welcome to a committal service at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan.16. Following the service a reception to celebrate Lorne's life will be held at the United Protestant Church Hall in Sydney River from 4-6 p.m.
