88, of Springdale, N.L., passed away peacefully at home on June 30, 2009. Born on Little Bay Island on October 29, 1920, he was the son of Fred Wiseman and Winnie (Parsons) Wiseman. He graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia Technical College in the late 1930s and then went on to enjoy an illustrious 40-year career as a mining engineer. A past president of the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL), Rupe worked for the Newfoundland government, Sysco Gold Mines, and Newfoundland Fluorspar (Alcan). He joined Alcan’s head office in Montreal as a director before he retired in 1976. The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy recognized his contributions to the mining industry with an honorary membership and District Distinguished Service Award in 1989. In 2008, he received an Engineers Canada Fellowship from PEGNL. An avid hunter and fisherman, he was also known for completing topographical maps of the Green Bay area of northwestern Newfoundland. Predeceased by his son, Ian, Rupe is survived by his loving wife, Margaret (Taylor) Wiseman; his devoted daughters, Barbara and Gail; and grandchildren Erik, Linnaea, Evelyn, Brad, and Lisa. A memorial service will be held at Grace United Church, Main Street, Springdale, at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2009. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.
