Leo Cormier
1909 - 2011 - Leo Henry Cormier, resident of the Drew Nursing Home, Sackville and formerly of Moncton and Grand Falls, passed away Monday, January 24, 2011 at the Sackville Memorial Hospital at the age of 101. Born in Chatham, New Brunswick, he was the son of the late Leonide Cormier and Cordelia Melanson. Leo was involved in the meat and grocery business for over 50 years, first working in St. George before relocating as a meat manager to stores in Moncton and Grand Falls. He operated his own meat and grocery business in Grand Falls for over 40 years and took much pride in the quality of his merchandise and customer service. He served on the Grand Falls town council for a number of years, and was a life member of the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his six children: Cheryl Ker (Gerry) of Toronto, Margaret Dukes (Tim Chappell) of Moncton formerly of Ottawa, Jim (Judith) of Riverview, Ron (Janice) of Riverview, Robert (Marcia) of Calgary and Joe (Barbara) of Halifax; sister Dorothy Cormier of Moncton; grandchildren Alyssa, John, Heather, Katie, Kevin, Krista, Hannah, Michael, Daniel, and great-grandchildren Sophie, Leo and Mateya. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Hilda (Baker), sisters Eva Leblanc, Freda McLaughlin, Geraldine Robichaud, Bernice (infant) and brother Aurelle ("Carl"). Leo was a strong family man and took great pleasure in family picnics and outings with his children, sharing his love of ice skating and swimming. He was a voracious reader and loved to discuss and debate ideas, placing great emphasis on the value of a good education - his penmanship was second to none. In his later years, he looked forward to visits with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who always brought a smile to his face.
The family will be receiving relatives and friends at Cobb's Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 330 Whitepine Road, Riverview (869-2007) on Friday, January 28 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM, with parish prayers and sharing of memories to take place at 8:30 PM at the funeral home. The funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Bernard's Roman Catholic Church, Botsford Street., Moncton on Saturday, January 29 at 11:00 AM. The interment will take place at the Assumption Parish Cemetery, Grand Falls at a later date. Donations to the Drew Nursing Home would be appreciated by the family.
