NEW GLASGOW - The family of the late Jessie Melanie Hopkins, is saddened to announce her passing at Highcrest Home, New Glasgow, on Wednesday, January 26, 2011.
Born in Wallace on March 10, 1919, to the late James and Sadie (Reid) Green, she was raised, following her mother's death, by grandmother Jessie Reid.
She married Albert Edward Hopkins in 1939 and they spent much of their married life in Pictou County. Jessie worked at various businesses in Pictou County, but was happiest as homemaker and "Mom" not only to her children but to many foster kids over the years. Following Albert's retirement from Trenton Works, they spent several years as building superintendents of apartment complexes in Ontario and in Halifax.
She is survived by daughter, Peggy (Pieter) Landzaat, Chance Harbour; sons, Wayne (Ruth), Pictou Landing; Doug (Elsie), Dartmouth; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; half-sisters, Gladys (Ron) Langille; Anita MacKay, both of Tatamagouche; sisters-in-law, Pearl Green, Lower Onslow and Kay Matheson, Truro; several nieces and nephews; very special family friend David (Yank) Aitken, New Jersey.
She was predeceased by her husband, Albert (1993); brothers: Vernon, Bill and Lawson; and foster son, Bob Cluney.
The family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow, from where funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday with Mr. Fergie MacKay officiating.
