It is with great sadness and sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, Dorothy Louise O'Brien on Friday, Jan. 28, 2011.
Dorothy was born in 1915 in Harbour Mille, Fortune Bay, N.L. Dorothy was the daughter of the late William H. and Mary Jane Barnes and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, James (Jim) O'Brien in 1995.
Throughout her 95 years, Dorothy was a kind, loving and devoted mother and grandmother. This was clearly evidenced by her pride in the achievements of her six children, 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She will be sorrily missed by all of them. Dorothy was well known for her excellent meals and hospitality, especially to those who were less fortunate. She also spent many hours visiting friends and shut-ins. Well into her 80s, Dorothy continued to enjoy her gardening and knitting. She liked to travel and did so at every opportunity.
Dorothy cherished her faith and was a devote member of St. Anthony Daniel parish for 52 years. Her Christian values were exhibited in her daily life and in the interactions with those around her. Remaining mentally alert and considerate to the very end, she was able to tell her family to "be good" and that "she loved them". Nana's generosity was only exceeded by her grace.
Dorothy is survived by four daughters, Catherine, Florence (Gerald) Penny, Jean (late Joseph) MacPhee, Patricia (Frank) Dairou; and two sons, Francis (Corry) O'Brien and Ronnie O'Brien, all of Sydney. Nana's passing is also mourned by her grandchildren, Lorne, Kevin, Jeannie, Christopher, Michael, Tracey, Janice, Lesley, Crystal, Theresa, James and Kyle. Nanny O'Brien will be sadly missed by her great-grandchildren, Amanda, Michael, Patrick, Christina, Katrena, Cameron, Jacob, Liam, Sarah Jean and Kayleigh, and her great-great-grandchildren, Grace, Sophie and Alexis.
Besides her parents and husband, Jim, Dorothy was predeceased by her first husband, Stephen Dollimount, five sisters, Stella, Florence, Esther, Blanche and Elizabeth and four brothers, Allan, George, Jim and Rueben.
The family is deeply indebted to her family physician, Dr. Estelle Cameron and nurse Shelley Martin for their care and compassion over many years which allowed Dorothy to remain at home until the time of her passing. Dorothy received loving care from her many wonderful home care providers of Cape Breton County Homemakers. The family also extends their gratitude to Dr. Ann Frances D'Intino, Beth Latham RN, and Brenda Yates RN of the Cape Breton District Palliative Care.
The family wishes to express a special thank you to daughter-in-law, Corry O'Brien RN for her loving care and devotion to Mom. Thank you to the registered nurses of the VON, especially Loren Pemberton RN, for their visits and also to Helena Lawrence of Family First Medical for her prompt attention to Dorothy's needs. Appreciation is also expressed to Fr. Lloyd Dwyer and Fr. Donald MacGillivary for attending to Dorothy's spiritual needs.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1 at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, Sydney. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2 at St. Anthony Daniel Church, Sydney, with Fr. Donald MacGillivary officiating.
