It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear father, Friday, Jan. 28, 2011, after a brief illness at the Glace Bay Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
He was 94-years-young and lived a full life. He was loved by all who met him, even though most people thought of him as a little grumpy, he had a heart of gold, and would do anything for you.
Dad was born in Margaree Valley. He was the son of the late Donald Stewart and Dorothy Carmichael.
Dad served with the RCCS Signal Corps, during the Second World War. He was very proud to be one of the liberators of Holland, and was fortunate enough to be selected by the Cape Breton Post as the veteran to attend the 50th V-Day celebrations in Holland.
He retired in 1981 from Maritime Tel&Tel. He was a Level II supervisor. He was a lifelong member of the Telephone Pioneers of America; Masonic Lodge, he was a Master Mason with the Tyrian Youth Lodge No 45 and received his 65 year pin; he was a member of the Isle Royale Chapter Rose Croix 18º Valley of Sydney; Cape Breton Lodge of Perfection 14º Valley of Sydney; Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite; a member of Cape Breton Shriner Club and a member of John Bernard Croak, Branch 3.
He leaves behind to mourn his sisters, Christine Munro, and Frances Ross; his children, Robert Stewart, Virginia Mac Lean, at home, Marg (Don) Vaters, Charles (Barb) Stewart, Kate (Adrian) Bona, all from Glace Bay, Gary (Jean) Stewart of Barrie, Ont.
He also leaves behind his grandchildren who loved him dearly, Juanita Gamble and Conrad Stewart, Laura MacLean, Daniel Stewart, D.J. and Michael Vaters, Victoria and Madeline Stewart, Megan, Mary-Anne and Josh Bona, Justin and Gary Jr. Stewart and Ashley Ferguson. Ashley was Dad's pride and Joy, he called her his little "baaa", he raised her as a daughter, he always said she is what made retirement bearable; and his great-grandchildren, Jarrod MacLean and Alexis Stewart.
Dad was predeceased by his loving wife, Hilda Doyle, sons, Clarence William, Donald James, daughter, Virginia Ann and stepson, Angus Reid.
Dad loved driving, and it didn't matter where we needed to go or at what time, he was always there for us. In the words of Dad's favourite singer, Vera Lynn, "Till we meet again, don't know where, don't know when, but I know we'll meet again some sunny day."
