With treasured memories of a life well lived, and hearts filled with sadness, the family of Mildred Mary Tower announces her passing on July 5th, 2009 in her 85th year. Born on June 28, 1924 in Amherst, N.S., she was a daughter of the late William and Anna Bell (Dobson) Swan. Mildred was a member of Immanuel United Church, having attended there for 79 years, she was a former choir member, a member of the Mother’s Club and a life member of the U.C.W, she was a member of the Amherst Golden Years Society, and the Amherst Branch of the Kidney Foundation. She was an employee of The Two Barkers until her marriage when she was promoted to the position of wife and loving mother. She enjoyed working with her hands and was very accomplished at knitting, needlework and quilting; she enjoyed playing cards and darts as well as volunteering at the Amherst Red Cross for the past three years. Her family was one of her greatest accomplishments and one to which she was very proud. Mildred is survived by her son James and his wife Norma of Port Perry, Ont.; Beatrice Harkness of Chapman Settlement; and Barbara and her husband John Reid of Maccan, 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Royal (1989); her twin sister Muriel (2006), sisters, Lillian (2001), Beulah (1978), Ruby (1929), brothers Arthur (1916), Roy (1920), Gerald (1924) Harold (1925) and Vincent (1950), son-in-law Roy Harkness (1992) and a granddaughter Kara (1976). Her remains are resting in Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (667-9906) with visiting Tuesday July 7th from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 8th at 11 a.m. from Immanuel United Church, Hickman Street, Amherst with Rev. Patti Blundell officiating. Interment will follow in Amherst Cemetery. Donations in Mildred’s memory may be made to the Immanuel United Church or a charity of your choice.
