The death of Mrs Mary Elizabeth Jarratt occurred unexpectedly but peacefully on January 29, 2011 at her residence in Saint John. Born on October 6, 1926 in Bathurst, she was the daughter of the late James and Olive (Steward) Keddie and the wife of the late William Ernest Jarratt, P.Eng. Mary grew up in Bathurst and graduated from Bathurst High School in 1943. After graduating from Mount Allison Commercial College in 1944, she was employed by the Protestant School Board in Quebec City. There she lived at the YWCA in old Quebec, making friendships that would last a lifetime. She returned to Bathurst in 1947 and worked at Bathurst Power and Paper for several years. Bill and Mary were married in 1956 and were transferred to Fredericton in 1958. After her children were grown, Mary returned to work as secretary to the Dean, Christ Church Cathedral, retiring in 1987. She was a longtime member of the ACW and the sanctuary guild. In retirement, she and Bill enjoyed travel including several trips to the UK for air force reunions, making many new friendships. Mary was a quiet and kind lady of deep faith. She is now reunited with Bill in the presence of their Lord and Savior. Mary was predeceased by her parents, her husband, sister Janet, brother James, sister in law Mabel and brother in law Sidney. She is survived by her daughter Dr Mary Jarratt, husband Ted Cragg and grandson Thomas William of Rothesay, her son Bill, wife Tricia, grandson Shane William and step-grandchildren Ryan and Megan Goodine of Oromocto, sister in law Lucy Jarratt and special nieces Caroline (Gerald) Power and Rowena (Harry) Sullivan all of Bathurst, cousins David Smith of the UK and Robert Frascadore and Father Henry Frascadore of Conn., USA, good friend the Rev. Elaine Lucas of Fredericton, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at 2pm at Christ Church Cathedral, Fredericton, with a reception to follow in the church hall. The Very Rev. Keith Joyce will officiate. For those who wish, memorials may be made to any charity.
