1921-2009
Harvie Leroy McWhirter, age 87, of Sackville and formerly of Dorchester occurred peacefully, surrounded by his family,  at his home in Sackville, on Thursday, July 2, 2009, following a lengthy illness. Born in Joggins, he was a son of the late Charles and Reta (Smith) McWhirter. Harvie was a veteran of WWII, serving with the 103rd Anti-Tank Regiment in England, France, Holland and Germany. He served with Corrections Canada for 30 years, retiring in 1977. A mason, he was Past Deputy Grand Master, Grand Lodge of NB, Past District Deputy, District #2 and Past Master, Sussex Lodge, #4, Dorchester, Past Patron of the Eastern Star, a former member of the Dorchester Volunteer Assn. and a member of the Sackville Branch #26, Royal Canadian Legion, and Dorchester citizen of the year  in 1989. Harvie will be sadly missed by his wife of 57 years, Audrey (Mitton), Sackville; six daughters, Geraldine (Gordon) Helm, Tidnish, NS, Sheila
 Foster, Medicine Hat, AB, Connie (Leonard) Mosher, Nackawick, NB, Sylvia LeFurgey, Calgary, AB, Wanda (Gary) Blue, Moncton, Cheryl (Marc) Belliveau, Sackville; three sons, Charles (Daphne), Amherst, Harvie (Harriette), Belmont, NS and David, Calgary, AB; 21 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; three half-brothers, Sidney (Betty-Ann) McWhirter, Jolicure, Ted McWhirter, Port Elgin, Percy (Mary) Priest, Economy, NS; two half-sisters, Bette Elliot, Lower Sackville, NS, Greta (Ellsworth) Patterson, Sackville. He was predeceased by brothers, Murlin and Sidney and half-sisters Lois and Trudy. Harvie¹s remains were entrusted into the care of the Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge St., Sackville (364-1300) from where the funeral service was held on Monday, July  6, 2009 at 2 p.m. The family received visitors at the funeral home on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday  from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
 Sussex Lodge #4 Masonic service was Sunday at 6:45 and Sackville Branch #26 Legion service at 7:30. Donations to the Sussex Lodge Scholarship Fund, the Dorchester Cemetery, or a charity of the donor¹s choice gratefully appreciated.
