Richard Albert Barker, born on March 13th, 1948, the first baby born in the Mankota Union Hospital, passed away, from cancer, on January 20th, 2011 in the Prairie View Health Centre in Mankota, SK. Richard is survived by his wife Bonnie Loewen of Mankota; his three children: Garett (Julie) of Nanton, AB; Jenifer Barker of Coquitlam, BC and Jeremy (Karla) of Mankota; his mother Bessie Barker of Swift Current and his brother Ken (Wendy) of Swift Current. He was predeceased by his father George. Richard attended school in Mankota, Kincaid and SIAST in Moose Jaw. He also took many courses throughout his life sharpening his natural skills in mechanics, repairing appliances and other fields. Richard lived for a while in Winnipeg working for the CPR, and then came home to the family farm in the late 1970's. Along with farming, Richard also drove highway tractors and operated a trackhoe and backhoe. He also ran a machining and welding business from his farm. Richard had a great sense of humor and always had time for the important things in life like visiting with friends, helping neighbors and supporting local charities. Richard did not want a funeral, so his Farwell Gathering was held on January 25th, 2011 in Chuck Loewen's shop. His wife and children said a few words of good bye for Richard, and then everyone raised a beer in a final toast to him.
