George (Arnett) Marchbank, born Oct. 6, 1930, Marchbank Road, Woodvale, P.E.I., son of the late George Henry and Mary Eleanor and (Dyment) Marchbank, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, on June 11, 2009.
Arnett moved to Onslow Mountain, N.S., with his family in 1944, where he lived until 1949. He then joined the Royal Canadian Army and was stationed at Shilo, Man., and later transferred to Chilliwack, B.C. to the 2nd Field Squadron, Royal Canadian Engineers. His unit served two years in Europe from 1953 to 1955 and Gagetown from 1958 to 1961. After his discharge, Arnett, Joyce and children moved to a farm in Keeble, Colchester County. Arnett and Joyce remained there until 2008 when they moved to their retirement home in Debert. Arnett and Joyce operated a small business at Brule for several years. Arnett was also employed as a welder on various construction projects across Canada. Arnett was well known in the community and was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Arnett is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Joyce (Delaney) Marchbank; daughter Annie (Kim) Langille, Tatamagouche; sons Arnett (Denise), Victoria, B.C., Thomas, Fort MacMurray, Charles, (Monique), Tatamagouche; grandchildren Julie and Jennipher Langille, Jessie and Joshua Marchbank, Brittany and Krista Marchbank; sisters Isabelle McLean (John), Portage La Prairie, Man.,. Annie Wenham (Ken), Nanton, Alta., Mary Nieforth, Carrols Corner, Milford, Mac Ayer (Odin Otterson), Onslow Mountain, N.S., brothers, Jack Marchbank (Doris) Lle Winton, Alta., Allan (Verna), Onslow Mountain; several nieces and nephews; brother-in-law Charles and Lorraine Delaney; sister-in-law Theresa Glass, Onslow Mountain.
Arnett was predeceased by sister Margaret Rix (Harold), Calgary; brother James (Mirna) Topley, B.C.; brothers-in-law Alfred Nieforth, Carrols Corner, N.S., Roland Delaney, Aubrey Delaney, Brian Glass; father and mother-in-law Roderick and Annie Delaney.
A graveside committal service will take place at a later date in Bible Hill Cemetery, Bible Hill. Family flowers only. Donations in Arnett’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Bible Hill Cemetery Fund. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mattatall~Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young St., Truro.
