THOMAS, Father John Charles "Jack" - 90, died peacefully in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, on Friday, February 11, 2011, with family by his side. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Gregory and Ann (Christian) Thomas. After serving his country, Jack remained active in RCNVR and an active member of Knights of Columbus Council 1097. He graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1949 and in 1951, while teaching at St. Patrick's Junior High, met and married the love of his life, Louise Beaton, whose union lasted 31 years. After her death and his retirement from teaching, he answered the call to priesthood. Following a period of study, he was ordained to the priesthood on May 23, 1987, at St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica by Archbishop of Halifax, James M. Hayes. Jack served generously as assistant priest at St. Mary's from 1987 until his retirement in 1995, when he took up residence at St. Agnes Rectory. He spent his remaining retirement years in Parkland, Clayton Park, before moving to Truro. He is survived by his children, Ann (Bob Walker), Owen Sound, Ontario; John (Violette), Truro; Edward (Frances), Halifax; grandchildren, Michelle (Justin Suda) Thomas, Edmonton, Alberta; Gregory Thomas, Truro; Teresa Thomas, Edmonton, Alberta; Annie, Louise and Sam Thomas, Halifax. Jack was predeceased by his beloved wife, Louise and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. The family wishes to express thanks and gratitude to Dr. Don Pugsley, staff at Colchester Regional Hospital, Williams Country Home and Val's Rest Home. Visitation will be held 2-4 p.m., today, February 7, 2011, at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. There will be a vigil in St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, 6903 Mumford Road, Halifax, today at 7 p.m., from where the funeral mass will be held 10 a.m., Tuesday, February 8, 2011. Interment in Mount Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jack's memory to Alzheimer Society or charity of choice are welcomed.
