Joseph Allen Gillis of Dartmouth, died surrounded by his family on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, at the Dartmouth General Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, March 23, 1917, he was a son of the late Angus and Flora (Gillis) Gillis.
Joe was an Airforce veteran of the Second World War. He began a rewarding career with the Royal Bank in New Waterford at the age of 18 and went on to manage branches in St. Peter's, New Waterford, Pictou and Dartmouth. Joe was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus and the Rotary Club, where he served as officer and president. His many interests included, fishing, curling, card playing and vacationing with his family. Joe was a loving father who will be sadly missed and always remembered for his unwavering commitment to his children, forever instilling the value and merit of education and a strong work ethic. Joe met his wife June, while working for the Royal Bank in Charlottetown. They were married at St. Peter's Church, Dartmouth on Nov. 10, 1947.
Joe is survived by his five children, JoAnn (Bruce) Grindley of Halifax, Karen (Michael) Laffin of Calgary, Alta., Mark (Jillian) of Windsor Junction, Deborah (Serge Belzile) Gillis of Canmore, Alta., and Joel of Halifax; grandchildren, John Richard 'J.R.', Luke and Michael Laffin, Jacqueline, Ashley and Joseph Gillis, Jessica and Lindsey Reed.
Joe was predeceased by his loving wife, June (Dingwell) in 2002, his parents and seven brothers and sisters.
Joe was a parishioner of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Dartmouth, since 1967, where a Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. Interment to follow in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens.
