It is with great sadness that we announce the passing Jan. 12, 2011, of Newton Robert (Bob) Turnbull, a boisterous, quiet, generous person who enjoyed a good time, and always had a quick smile and humour that made others smile. Born March 26, 1933, and raised in Digby, Bob joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1955, serving as a gunner for 27 and a half years. He was stationed in Debert, Gagetown, N.B., Shilo and Winnipeg in Manitoba, and Cornwallis. Throughout most of his service, he was a member of the 3rd Regiment of Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, and trained recruits, taught courses such as defensive driving, and enjoyed his work as a drill instructor. As part of 3RCHA humanitarian missions, he engaged in flood control, fire fighting, and avalanche control. In the late 1960s, Bob served as detachment commander with Ace Mobile Forces in an artillery battery to support NATO for any hostilities that should erupt. He prided himself as a 155-millimetre detachment commander, and attained the rank of sergeant before retiring in 1983. He loved children, was an involved dad, and instilled an appreciation for music. He enjoyed playing baseball, golf and was an avid sports fan. In 1969, Bob was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and faced many other health challenges over the years. His determination served him well in dealing with effects of his condition. In 1989, he and Grace moved back to Nova Scotia until 2002, when he settled in Rivers, Man., before moving in 2006 to Tabor Home in Morden, Man. Left with fond memories are his wife, Grace; daughter, Michelle (John); son, Mike (Elaine); grandsons, Ewan, Kyle; granddaughter, Quinn; great-grandson, Jordan; brothers, Don (Zelda); Lloyd (Ardith); and sisters, Ray Oliver (known as Sis); Lorna Cummings; Wendy Weir (Terry); many cousins, nieces and nephews; plus numerous in-laws from the Ross side. He was predeceased by his father, Lloyd; mother, Ruby; brother, Ernie; sister, Lois; and brothers-in-law, Randy Cummings and Garnet Oliver; plus many army buddies. Donations can be made in Bob's memory to Tabor Home, 230 9th St., Morden Man., R6M 1Y3; Riverdale Personal Care Home, 512 Quebec Street, Rivers Man., R0K 1X0; the MS Society or charity of one's choice. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life service will be held later in Nova Scotia.
