Lieu de naissance : Moncton, Nouveau Brunswick, Canada
Lieu de décès : Balls Creek, Nouvelle Ecosse, Canada
Date de décès : 6 février 2011
It is with broken hearts that we held Dad for the last time on Sunday Feb. 6, 2011, at the QE II Health Sciences Center in Halifax. Ian Douglas MacKinnon, beloved father, grandfather, uncle and friend and resident of Balls Creek, passed away peacefully after a quick but devastating illness surrounded by his family. We take comfort in knowing that Dad is now with his beloved Mae, and now catching up on the last three years.
Born in Moncton, Ian was the son of the late Jack and Nellie (Black) MacKinnon.
He was a hard worker all his life, running his own saw mill while holding down a full-time job at the Sydney Steel Plant. Ian was a devout and faithfilled member of St. Mary's Church in Frenchvale. In earlier years he was involved in boxing, winning a Golden Glove Award, he was a champion swimmer and excellent skater. He managed to live life to the fullest by filling in his spare time playing in tarabish tournaments, and being 'the best' at crib, singing with the Memory Lane Singers, telling jokes and spending summers in Iona at MacKinnons Harbour. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, nieces and nephews telling them stories of his boxing days, reciting poetry by Robert Frost and listening to their stories.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Ian was a friend to all who knew him and will be sadly missed.
He is survived by his daughter, Linda (George) Fortune, Balls Creek; three sons, Doug (Rose) MacKinnon, Ricky MacKinnon, both of Balls Creek, Michael (Mary) MacKinnon, Fredericton; his 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his companion Lorraine Young.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mae (Slade) MacKinnon, his sisters, Marion Lumsden, Gertrude 'Micky' Gamble and Vera Ratchford, and step-brother Paul Schaller.
Visitation for Ian will be held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Mary's Church, Frenchvale, with Rev. Paul Abbass offictiating. Burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Frenchvale.
