Jean E. (Hambleton) Abbass, passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, in the Aberdeen Hospital on Feb. 10, 2011, following a brief illness at the age of 88.
Born in New Glasgow, N.S. she was a daughter of Arthur and Dorothy (Matthews) Hambleton. Jean enjoyed many varied pastimes including sewing and knitting for those she loved. Family and friends were a source of great joy to her and she greeted each day with enthusiasm and gratitude and an indomitable spirit. Her love of life was a source of inspiration to us all. As a member of the Catholic Women’s League, she had a proud and special moment when she was recently presented with her 60 year membership pin. At various times in her life she taught night school, belonged to the Royal Canadian Legion Auxiliary, the Daughters of Mary Lebanese Society, and was an active member of her church and community. In recent years she was an active and welcome member of the Ruby Red Sisterhood branch of the Red Hat Society.
Jean is survived by her children, Darlene (Peter) Green, New Glasgow N.S., Fr. Paul Abbass, Frenchvale, N.S., Louise Irving, Saint John, N.B.; five grandchildren, Kerri, Gregory, Brier, Courtney and Nicholas; seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Shirley Howes, Ottawa, Ont., Joyce McMullen, Trenton, N.S. and brother, Harold (Isabel) Hambleton, New Glasgow, N.S.; many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband and soul mate of 57 years, Louis; as well as her parents; sisters, Stella and Dorothy and brothers, Leslie, John and Doug.
Visitation will be held from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow, N.S. Funeral mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 14 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, New Glasgow with Fr. Paul Abbass presiding.
