SMITH, Edwin Ashmore – 89, Truro/Smithfield. It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Edwin Ashmore Smith in the early hours of Friday, February 11, 2011, at his residence, The Mira Long Term Care Centre, Truro. Born June 11, 1921 in Smithfield, Guysborough County, Edwin spent his working life as an electrician and fruit farmer. He served with the Canadian Army during the Second World War, was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and spent many enjoyable yeas as a respected member of St. Mary¹s Rifle Club. He also loved to travel and thoroughly enjoyed entertaining company at his lifelong Smithfield home. In earlier years, Edwin also loved to spend hours in the air piloting a private plane and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Edwin was predeceased by his parents, Isaac and Rose (Thomas) Smith and his only sibling, Gladys (Smith) Sullivan. He is survived by his brother-in-law, Merle Sullivan; nieces, Donna McInnis, Brenda Sullivan; nephews, Harry, Allan, Brian and David Sullivan. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26, will conduct a tribute service 4 p.m., Sunday, February 13, 2011, followed by the funeral service at 4:30 p.m., Pastor Greg Porter officiating. Spring interment will be held in Smithfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Edwin’s memory to a charity of choice are welcomed.
