She was born January 11, 1925 at her grandparent's home in Vancouver, BC and aptly named Dorothy which means "Gift of God". Dorothy attended school at Dunelm School, Swift Current Collegiate Institute, and Normal School in Moose Jaw. Dorothy married David Burnett on June 29, 1945 at Medicine Hat, Alberta. Dorothy began teaching at the age of seventeen, her first school being Woodchuck near Carrot River. Her next school was Swinton where she taught until her marriage, her next role being a homemaker and mother. Dorothy was a pillar in her community, and spent endless hours volunteering. This began with the Swinton Community Club and as a trustee on the Swinton School Board. She also helped with church services at Swinton School and became a member of the Dickson Home and School when Bryce and Brady attended there. She was a leader of the Yellow Lake 4-H Club and a member of the Southwest Regional 4-H Council. She served on the Swift Current Union Hospital Board and as well was Vice-President of the Palliser Regional Care Centre Board from 1977-1983. Dorothy became an Honorary Life Member of the Swift Current Agriculture and Exhibition Association in 1989, serving as a director for 28 years, as president, organizing the Talent Stage and working with Doc's Town. She was a member of the Swift Current Canada Day Committee, and of the Yellow Lake History Group which compiled Treasured Memories. In 1988 Dorothy was presented with the Order of Merit by the Swift Current Chamber of Commerce. She was a member of Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation for 40 years, serving locally as president and treasurer. In 1999 the Swift Current Wildlife Federation honored David and Dorothy by naming a pond on the southwest of Swift Current the "Burnett Recreation Site." After moving to the Bentley Dorothy became involved with the newsletter, concerts and social activities there. Through the years she worked with David on the farm, and her special interests were gardening, sewing and knitting. Dorothy was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, the #1 fan of all her children and grandchildren. Fashion was of the essence to Dorothy; she had a closet where her granddaughters liked to "shop". Her positive attitude and optimism have been a shining example for her family and she will be missed. In her memory, memorial donations may be made to the David Burnett Scholarship Fund, c/o Box 66, Swift Current, SK. S9H 3V5. This will become the David and Dorothy Burnett Scholarship Fund. Warren's Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
