BENT, Laurie Armstrong - 89, of New Minas. It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Laurie on February 12, 2011 at Evergreen Home for Special Care in Kentville. Born in Round Hill on August 29, 1921 to the late John and Rhoda (Armstrong) Bent he lived in Tupperville where many an apple was picked. He was educated there and at Bridgetown Regional High. He started working for Maritime Tel & Tel in Digby at the age of 18 where he did many installations at the Cornwallis Base. He married his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Cook, on August 8, 1944, and they lived in Barton (Dorman House). In 1949 they moved to Middleton where their three sons were born. Laurie was active in Scouting and was the First District Commissioner for Annapolis County. He joined the Telephone Pioneers in 1961 while in Yarmouth and was still active with them. Laurie was a St. John Ambulance Instructor in Middleton and Yarmouth. He was always an avid fisherman, hunter, and bridge player. Laurie found travelling with Dot very rewarding and especially fondly remembers his trip with Dot to Chicago in 1954. His heart will always be in Sissiboo and Fifth Lake. He is survived by three sons, Laurie John (Winnie), Canso; Brian Dale (Anna-Maria), Prospect; Rodney Curtis (Charlene), Kingsport; 11 grandchildren, Kelly, Kirk, Peter, Kyle, Tyler, Bridget, Meagan, Leisha, Ethan, Mariel and Silas; 11 great grandchildren, Kaleigh, Abbey, Maggie, Ben, Megan, Cody, Courtney, Bailey, Mason, Riley, and Orion; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by wife, Dot; brother, Jack, and sister, Sarah. Cremation has taken place. There was no visitation, by request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 16, 2011 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Doctor Peter Lohnes officiating. Donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the charity of your choice.
