Kakie Michalik, 63, of Borden Street, Glace Bay, passed away Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, at his residence.
Born in Glace Bay, Kakie was the son of the late Gus and Mary Ruth (Fricker) Michalik.
He was a member of Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay.
Kakie was a heavy equipment operator with the town of Glace Bay and CBRM for 44 years.
He loved sports, especially hockey and baseball, and in his younger years was scouted by the NHL. Kakie loved animals and was also an avid card player, his choice being, Texas hold’em. But most importantly, he was a family man, a great provider and a caring husband, father and grandfather.
Kakie is survived by his wife, Linda (Martin) Michalik; three daughters, Michelle, Denise (Gerry), Ashley (Kyle), all in Glace Bay; and one son, Joey, Sioux Lookout, Northern Ontario. Also surviving are Kakie’s three brothers, Abbie (Gina), Ted (Carmella), Glace Bay, Gussie, Ontario; two sisters, Olga (Naish) Burke, Glace Bay, and Mary Ruth (Brian) LePine, Halifax. Kakie dearly loved his four grandchildren, Kendra, Hailey, Amanda and Chris. He will sadly be missed by several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Shirley Rogers.
Visitation will be held Wednesday and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home,16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Norman MacPhee is Friday at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Church with cremation to follow. All are invited to join the family for a reception in the church hall, directly below the church. Interment will be held at a later date in St. Anthony’s Cemetery with his parents.
As an expression of sympathy for Kakie, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation.
