It is with great sadness that we, the family of the late David Matthews announce his passing on July 8, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.
Born in Sydney Mines, Dave was the son of the late Walter and Gladys (Rose) Matthews. He was a member of Wilson United Church, Florence.
Dave was employed with Devco for 33 years, working 12 years at the Princess Colliery, the next 11 years at the Wash Plant, and then at the Prince Mine until his retirement in 1992.
Dave’s greatest passion, besides his family, was watching his grandsons play hockey. Grandfather was always at the games to cheer on his boys, and when he wasn’t cheering on his “tigers”, he was cheering on his Toronto Maple Leafs.
He was a friend and loving companion to his wife of 45 years, Margaret (Carter) Matthews; loving father to his son, Shaun (Donna), Bedford; his daughters, Lisa (Gary) Mansfield, North Sydney and Sherrie (Blair) Gillis, Grand Mira South. His greatest pleasures in life were his seven grandchildren, who were the lights of his life, David, Kyle, Matthew, Ryan, Andrew, and John were his “tigers” when they were small. Even after they grew into young men, to him they were still his “tigers”. He is also survived by his granddaughter, his one and only “princess”, Megan Ann Elizabeth. Dave is also survived by his sister, Blanche (Kevin) Headley; brothers, Bobby and Gilbert (Kathy); brothers-in-law, George Carter, Robert (Judy) Carter, Donnie (Anne) Carter, Brian (Eileen) Carter, Terry (Isabel) Carter and Ronnie Carter. His family would like to acknowledge his great appreciation for his neighbours Johnny and Dorothy, Debbie and Eddie, and Barb and Bruce.
Besides his parents, Dave was predeceased by his brother, Phillip; sisters-in-law, Betty Matthews and Faith Carter and his brother-in-law, John MacAulay.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. His family will receive visitors in the J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Monday, July 13, 2009, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Wilson United Church, Florence, with Norma Mills, DLM officiating. Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Grandfather’s wishes were to leave a living testament for his grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, any donation to the Northside Minor Hockey Association would be greatly appreciated.
