He was predeceased by a sister Rita (Vincent) Hickey of Scoudouc Road. Joe was a farmer all his life, raising dairy and beef cattle. He raised sheep for many years; and in most recent years, he got much enjoyment from raising and racing standardbred race horses. He was happiest while out working in the fields and family was a priority. Called “Papa Joe”, he had a special relationship with each and every one of his 12 grandchildren. In his earlier years, he established and operated a local riding stable called “Joe’s Ponies”. He enjoyed many trips to his hunting camp in Elgin. He was a member (since he was 10 years old) of the Shediac Agricultural Society # 15 of which he was Secretary/Treasurer for 33 years. He was a member of the Standardbred Canada and the PEI Horse Owner’s Assoc., formerly a member of the NB Sheep Assoc. and the NB Milk Producers. Many people became familiar with Joe through the interviews he gave on the CBC Radio about his thoughts on farming and his philosophies. He was invited to speak to farmers on farming issues at numerous agricultural meetings around the Atlantic Provinces. He was involved in many experimental trials with field crops and beef cattle working closely with the government field men. He was named “Farmer of the Year” by the Provincial Soil & Crops Assoc. in 1987. He also wrote a book called, “Memories of a Happy Farmer”, which has been enjoyed by many. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
