Bruce Edward Willis, 74 of New Glasgow passed away Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, in the Aberdeen Hospital.
Born in Halifax and raised in Sydney, he was a son of the late Captain John H. Willis and Anne (Predham) Willis. He graduated from the commerce program at Dalhousie University in 1960, and was a certified management accountant (CMA). He was retired from Pictou Industries shipyard.
Bruce had a long record of volunteer involvement in the communities in which he lived over the years, including Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Family Services of New Glasgow, and the Canadian Diabetes Association, where he served on the national board of directors during the 1980s, and later as president of its Nova Scotia division.
Bruce was a devoted parishioner of St. John the Baptist church, New Glasgow.
He was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, and had served as Grand Knight of Council 1667 from 1996 to 1998. He was a member of the Crow’s Nest Naval Officers Club.
Bruce is survived by his wife of 49 years, Anne (Sholdra) Willis; by his children, Michael (Maureen) Willis and Michelle (James Stanley) and by his grandchildren Joseph Willis, Ivan Willis, and Andrew Willis-Stanley. Also survived by his brothers, Jake (Mary-Ann), Wetaskiwin, Alta., Ronald, Cole Harbour and James (Patricia), Sydney, and several nephews and nieces. Bruce was a beloved husband, father and “Grampy”, and was happiest spending time with family, especially his three grandsons.
His positive attitude remained constant through many health challenges and physical limitations, and he was always ready with an entertaining story or joke for guests. A firm Canadiens fan, he particularly enjoyed telling Maple Leaf jokes.
Bruce’s legacy serves to remind everyone that the important things in life are family, friends and faith.
Visitation will be held at the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow on Wednesday, Feb. 23, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will take place Thursday, Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, New Glasgow, with Fr. Gary MacPherson officiating. Cremation will follow. Interment will take place at a later date.
Family flowers only. Donations in Bruce’s memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, or a charity of one’s choice.
