Jack McMaster
(1939 – 2011) - It is with deep and profound sadness that the family of Jack McMaster announce his death. Jack passed away at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Monday, February 21, 2011 at the age of 72. Christened ‘John’, but always and forever known as ‘Jack’ to all, he was born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia on February 6, 1939. Jack was the son of the late Henriette (Sullivan) and Orrin McMaster. Jack was predeceased by his first wife Joyce (Gillis), and is survived by his beloved wife Marcia (Bolton) who- besides being his wife, partner and friend- was also an exceptional caregiver to him in his later years. Jack leaves behind four children for whom he always loved unconditionally: Jayne (Brendan), John (Carol), Sue, and Peter (Christa); and was also a wonderful stepfather to Scott (Alexis) and Dana. Grampy Jack will be dearly missed by his cherished grandchildren Aidan, Josh, Eva, Olivia, Kate, Kayla, Kyle and Mackenzie. Jack loved his childhood home village of Boylston, Nova Scotia and, although he left home at age 17 to embark on a career in business that spanned the rest of his life, he returned to Boylston whenever he could to reconnect with childhood friends and relatives. After a lengthy career that began at the Royal Bank, and continued in sales and sales management, Jack became the first Subway restaurant franchisee in Saint John in 1991 at the age many people start to consider retirement and was known as the “Subway Cookie King”. In addition to his role as a husband and a father, Jack was a very special cousin, uncle, brother, colleague, employer, neighbour and friend to many. Jack’s sister Doris- who died in 2008, was a very special part of Jack’s life whom he loved dearly- and he missed her visits from Halifax and nightly phone calls since her unexpected passing. His presence will be missed by his long time group of friends affectionately referred to as ‘The Pigs’- especially his oldest and dearest friends Phil and Marie Munroe. Donations in memory of Jack can be made to Canadian Diabetes Association, Alzheimer’s Society, Salvation Army, or a charity of choice.
Visitation to celebrate Jack’s life will be Thursday, February 24 from 2 to 4 p.m., and 6:30 to 9 p.m. with funeral service Friday, February 25 at 2 p.m., both at Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John, N.B. Interment at a later date. Online condolences can be made at www.fundyfuneralhome.com
