Walter John Champion
1918 - 2011 - John Champion of Moncton, passed away peacefully at The Moncton Hospital on Friday, February 18, 2011 at the age of 92 years. Husband of Phyllis Anne (George) Champion. Born in Quebec City, he was the son of the late Walter S. and Effie (Dunlop) Champion. John was a veteran of the WWII having served with the 57th Battery 1st Canadian Anti Tank Regiment RCA from September 1939 to May 1945, in Canada, United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean and Italy. He retired as a salesman from Irwin Toy and Irwin Specialty in Toronto travelling Quebec, the Maritimes and Newfoundland. John was a ham radio operator for many years and belonged to the Moncton Area Radio Amateur club, having call signs VE9AG, VE2MZ and VE1BRP. Besides his beloved wife, John is survived by son; Anthony (Shirley) of Mississauga, Ont., his daughter; Carole Whitcomb (Bob) of Ottawa, Ont., sister-in-law; Barbara George (late Bill), Moira Lawrence (late Jerry), brother-in-law; Peter George (Linda). Also survived by Audrey Paton, mother of his children, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters; Anne Champion Ross (late Donald) and Constance Champion.
Visitation at Fair Haven Funeral Home on Friday, February 25, 2011 from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm. A legion service will be held at the funeral on Friday at 3:45pm. Funeral service will be held at Fair Haven Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 2pm with Rev. Brent Ham officiating. Burial to follow at Fair Haven Memorial Gardens.
