NICKERSON, Grace Marguerite- It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved sister, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother Grace Marguerite (Ward) Nickerson. Grace died surrounded by her loving family on Friday, February 18, 2011. Grace was born on July 5, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Clarence “Ted” Ward and Susan (Hines) Ward. She is survived by two daughters, Leah (Ned) Mintis, Cambridge; Ruth, Aldershot; two sons, Brian (Lee), Aldershot; Paul (Lynn), Moncton. She is also survived by grandchildren, Lisa (Francois) Levesque, Yarmouth; Grace Mintis, Cambridge; Christina (Gerry) Mahar, Kentville; Jeffery Nickerson, New Minas; Emily Nickerson, Moncton; great grandchildren, Noah, Elliot, William, Rissa, and soon Addison. Grace is also survived by her brothers, Crandall, Lloyd, Donnie and Bill; sisters, Emma, Bernice and Diana. She was predeceased by her brother, Lindsay. Grace was predeceased by her husband, Leland in 1991. During the war Mum served with the WACs in Ontario and Nova Scotia. After demobilization she became a Certified Nursing Assistant. Grace was one of the founding members of the Valley Chapter of the NSAC. She worked at the Nova Scotia Sanatorium and Blanchard Fraser Memorial Hospitals from 1947 until her retirement in 1982. Grace had many passions, one of which was cake decorating. She baked, designed, and decorated many cakes for weddings and special occasions over the years. She was known by many as the “puppet mitten lady” as for the past three decades she tirelessly knitted these character mittens for sale at craft shows. Many of these were original designs from comic books or cartoons. She also enjoyed many other crafts. Grace loved to travel and took many trips to Florida, across Canada, Ireland, England and Wales and made many friends along the way. Some of Mum’s favorite associations were the Bethany Memorial Baptist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary; Aldershot TOPS, Royal Canadian Legion, Kentville, and New Horizon Seniors Club. The family would like to thank the staff of the Valley Regional Hospital Emergency and Medical Unit. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Bethany Memorial Baptist Church Ladies Auxiliary. Cremation has taken place and there was no visitation, by request. There was a celebration of Grace’s life, followed by a reception, on Monday, February 21, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville with Reverend Thelma McLeod officiating.
