Donald Paris

First African-Nova Scotian elected town councilor passes away.
Donald Reid Paris age 68, of Amherst passed away Sunday, February 27, 2011 at Moncton Hospital, Moncton, NB., following a brief illness.
Born in Amherst, he was a son of the late Edward and Inez (Crowley) Paris.
Don had served on Amherst Town Council for 17 years as well as many boards and committees and served as Deputy Mayor from 1991-1992.
He also served on the local school board and Department of Social Services.
Don was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #10, Amherst for 38 years and the RCAF Club in Amherst.
He was a long serving member of CANSA.
Don was employed at IMP Aerospace Components from 1968 - 2004, serving as president of the United Steelworkers of America local for a period of six years, as well as the plant’s management team. Later Don worked for Noye Enterprises, Amherst for six years until his illness.
His great support, contributions and expertise to this community, will always be remembered and appreciated.
Don leaves behind to mourn his loving wife the former, Eileen Powell; son, Todd (Crystal) of Thompson, Manitoba; daughter, Julie Paris (Jimmy) of Amherst; step sons, Jack (Cecile) Crowe of Winnipeg, Manitoba and Bobby Crowe of River Hebert; step daughters, Lucy Ann Crowe (John) and Lynn (Carvel) Porter both of Springhill, Louise Crowe (Bruce) of Nappan, Heidi Crowe of Kelowna, BC and Laura Lee Crowe (Keith) of Amherst; grandson, Alexander; several step grandchildren; step great grandchildren; cousins; and extended family.
Cremation has taken place.
A time of visitation will be held on Thursday, March 3, 2011 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 10 tribute service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral service to be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m., Rev. Christine Slaughter, Pastor of Highland AME Church officiating all in Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (667-9906). Interment will take place in the spring in the Amherst Cemetery.
Donations in Don’s memory may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No.10, Diabetic Association or Heart and Stroke Foundation.
