John M. Haley, 92, of Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay and formerly of King Street, New Waterford, died Friday, July 10, 2009, at Taigh Na Mara.
Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Leonard and Annie (Carroll) Haley.
He was a veteran of the Second World War serving with the Cape Breton Highlanders. He was wounded in action in Italy in 1944. John was a member of Branch 15, Royal Canadian Legion, New Waterford.
He retired from the Cape Breton Development Corp., where he worked as an ash wheeler, fireman in No. 12 boiler room, oiler and 1st class engineer on No. 12 main deep steam engine and on change over, its electric engine. After the close of No. 12 colliery in 1973, he transferred to Lingan colliery as hoist operator on the three engines there. He retired on Dec. 31, 1982.
He is survived by his wife, the former Bernice Butler Cathcart; three sons, John Cathcart, Halifax, Colin, Martin, both of England; one daughter, Margaret ‘Terry’ Bradbury, New Waterford; as well as grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, John was predeceased by one daughter, Nita (Mrs. Richard Kierkowski), one brother, Carroll, three sisters, Mary Devoe, Margaret King and Alice Wolgien.
There will be no visitation. In accordance with John’s wishes, his remains were donated to Dalhousie University, Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology for the advancement of medical education and research.
A memorial mass to celebrate John’s life will be held Wednesday, July 15 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating. A luncheon will follow at the Carmel Centre, New Waterford.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.
