Doris Nellie (nee Manners) McGuinness

McGuinness, Doris Nellie( nee Manners), went home to be with her Lord on February 23, 2011 at the Lions Gate Hospice. She will be forever lovingly remembered by her son Robert, daughter-in-law Barbara and her two grandchildren Meghan (Nick) and Brian. She is also survived by many cousins and old friends here and in other parts of Canada. Mum was predeceased by her beloved husband, of 52 years, Roland in 1998.
Doris was born at home on March 9, 1922 in Truro Nova Scotia, the only child of John William Manners and Laura Priscilla McCallum (of Moose River, Cumb. Co). She grew up in Truro surrounded by a large extended family and made many life-long friends.
On January 12, 1941 she met her future husband Rolly MicGuinness while skating on the Truro marsh. Five years later on April 24, 1946 they were were married at St. Agnes Anglican Church in North Vancouver, their son, Bob, was born the following year. In 1948, she and Rolly bought their home in West Vancouver where she continued to live until shortly before her death.
Doris always loved Truro and returned to visit family and friends more than a dozen times. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, skating and dancing and was always ready to go out—for a meal, for shopping, for visiting or for sightseeing. Her family was her life and she was a very involved mother and later grandmother to Meghan and Brian, baking Washington pies and thousands of cookies, reading stories and playing games.
Mum was a woman of strong faith and a firm believer in the power of prayer She started attending St. Christopher’s (West Vancouver) in 1947 and has been a member ever since. A Celebration of Life will be held at her church on March 4, 2011. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Gideons or to the Canadian Bible Society in her name.
