Calixte Deveaux, 94, of LeDrew Street, New Waterford, passed away Monday, March 7, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Cheticamp, he was the son of the late Hubert and Julie (Boudreau) Deveaux.
Calixte was a longtime member of Mt. Carmel Church.
He was a carpenter by trade, working several years with J.W. Stephens and J.A. Borden construction companies. Calixte was one of the longest surviving members of the Carpenters Union, Local 1588, having served over 70 years.
Even after retirement, he loved going down in his basement where his carpentry shop was located, always busy and working on little projects, some of which included making fiddles.
Calixte enjoyed hunting and fishing, but mostly going snowmobiling with his grandson Stephen, who was like a son to him. He had a great sense of humour and never lost touch with his French heritage, which he always admired.
Calixte served with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War.
He is survived by his three daughters, Darlene (Graham), New Waterford, Diane (Steve) O’Brien, Kentucky, Marion (John), Falmouth, N.S.; and one sister, Sr. Rita Deveaux, Filles de Jesus, Trois-Rivieres, Que. Calixte is also survived by five grandchildren, Stephen Deveaux (Lisa), Westminster, Maryland, Ken (Andrea), Cindy (Paul) O’Brien, Kelly (Todd) Easton, all in Kentucky, Brittany, Falmouth, N.S.; six great-grandchildren, Taylor Deveaux, Westminster, Md., Patricia O’Brien, Garrett O’Brien, Dalton O’Brien, Shelby and Tinley Easton, all in Kentucky. He will be sadly missed by his brother-in-law, John Angus McEachern; sister-in-law, Bridget LeBlanc; and several nieces and nephews.
Calixte was predeceased by his wife, Nora (McEachern) Deveaux in July 2000, three brothers, Willie, Francis, Joseph, two sisters, Mary Aucoin and Elvina Bourgeois.
Visitation will be held today (Tuesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Ray Huntley is Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. in St. Leonard’s Church, Mt. Carmel Avenue, New Waterford. Interment in Mt. Carmel Cemetery at a later date. All are invited to join the family for a reception at the KOC hall, Plummer Avenue.
Veterans are invited to form an honour guard in memory of their departed comrade at the church.
As an expression of sympathy for Calixte, memorial donations in his memory may be made to palliative care or the Nova Scotia Kidney Foundation.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Veterans Affairs, palliative care, dialysis unit and the home care workers for their compassion and kindness shown to Calixte throughout the years.
