Passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at St. Clare’s Hospital, two days short of his 95th birthday, Brother Patrick J. Batterton of the Christian Brothers’ community, Mount St. Francis, St. John’s. Predeceased by his parents Philip and Margaret (Devine) of King’s Cove Head, by his brothers, Dan, John and James and his sisters Catherine Malone, Mary and Elizabeth. Wake at Mount St. Francis, 4 Merrymeeting Road, on Thursday, March 10 and Friday, March 11 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Prayer service Friday evening at 8:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist on Saturday, March 12 at 10:00 a.m., followed by burial in the Christian Brothers’ plot at Belvedere Cemetery. Grateful thanks to his physician Dr. Patrick O’Shea and to the nurses and staff at St. Clare’s for their kindness and patience in caring for Br. Batterton during his last illness. Brother Batterton will be mourned, not only by his Christian Brothers’ Community and his relatives, including Mrs. Rita Batterton (sister-in-law) and his cousins Helen (Batterton) Kennedy, Jim, John and Eugene Batterton, Father Aidan Devine, Brendan Devine and Gerard Devine, but especially by the former students in his celebrated English classes at St. Patrick’s Hall Schools, Holy Cross School and Br. Rice High School.
