John Joseph ‘Joe the Goat’ MacKenzie, 77, of Emerald Street, New Waterford, passed away March 9, 2011, at home.
Born Nov. 8, 1933 in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Frederick and Mildred (Boutilier) MacKenzie.
A pipefitter by trade, Joseph travelled to various places throughout Canada for employment, but he always considered New Waterford home.
He is survived by his daughter, Shelley (Derick Honig), Halifax; her mother, Arlene. His pride and joy his grandchildren, Hannah and Christian; his sisters, Theresa (Fitzpatrick), Nellie (Gillis), with whom he resided, Charlotte (Neil MacKenzie); his brother, Freddie, (Sharon); nephew, Gerard and Wendy (Gillis), along with all his other nieces, nephews and extended family.
Predeceased by his mother, father and sisters, Hilda (Gillis) and Evelyn (Campbell).
One of ‘Joe the Goat’s’ famous sayings was “you can’t fatten a thoroughbred.” His sharp wit and cunning sense of humour will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass of Celebration will take place at the Parish Church of St. Leonard’s at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 12 with Fr. Douglas MacDonald officiating.
