The death of E. Grace Huestis occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Friday, March 11, 2011, following a stroke five weeks ago. Born in Saint John on July 22, 1917, she was the daughter of the late George and Anne Doherty, and widow of Berton W. Huestis. Grace was the oldest living member of Lancaster Baptist Church, having first attended services there at the age of two. Grace’s Christian faith was evident throughout her life. She was the first woman deacon of Lancaster Baptist and a charter member of the Rolanda Barss Women’s Missionary Society. As a young woman, Grace fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a teacher. She began her teaching career at a one-room school in Central Cambridge and also taught at the New Brunswick Protestant Orphan’s Home and Barnhill Memorial School. Grace was a born teacher. When not teaching professionally, she was passing on her wisdom to family members young and old, including six great grandchildren. In their fifty-four years of marriage, Grace was also a wonderful support and wife to her late husband, Bert. Grace is survived by her son David Huestis and daughter-in-law Faye, of Saint John, and her daughter Anne Scott, of Hampton. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Paul Huestis of Glenwood, Peter Huestis (Betsy) of Oklahoma City, Jennifer Huestis of Saint John, Heather Scott (Richard Jones) of Hampton, Janet Scott (Mark Leger) of Saint John, Steven Scott of Victoria, B.C., and great-grandchildren; Xavier Huestis, Meelahn, Ahreeyahn and Jeeyahn Scott-Weabury, and Jack and Ella Scott Leger. Grace was predeceased by her husband Bert; son-in-law Neil Scott; grandson Jamie Scott; and sister Georgie.
Resting at Brenan’s Bay View Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Road, Saint John (634-7425) with visiting on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM.The Funeral Service will be held from Lancaster Baptist Church on Tuesday, March 15, 2011at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at a later date at Brown’s Flat Baptist Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to Lancaster Baptist Church, Camp Wegesegum, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
