It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Claude Bailey, 68, a resident of Glace Bay, and formerly of Sydney Mines. He passed away on Monday, March 14, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family, after a brief battle with cancer.
Born in Sydney Mines on June 19, 1942, he was the son of the late Edwin and Margaret (Rateau) Bailey.
Claude was a coal miner at the age of 18. After that, he went on to become a wheelsman on the Great Lakes for 35 years with S.I.U. He was a devoted sailor.
Claude was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be sadly missed by his beloved wife, Andrewlena ‘Lee’ (Bird) Bailey; sons, Hugh (Bonnie), Bruce (Wendy), Greg (Nancy) and daughter, Belinda Nicholson. Also left to mourn are his precious grandchildren, Greg (Candace), Ian (Agnieszka), Krystal (Francis), Nolan, Katie (Pacho), his little princess Lacey and his two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Emily, whom he loved dearly. Claude is also survived by his sisters, Barb (Dave) Martin and Sheila Luker; his brothers, Eddie (Ella) and John (Marlene); numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Claude was predeceased by his sister, Betty MacIntyre and his brothers, Joe and Henry.
Claude’s family would like to thank his first cousin, George Bailey, who was like a brother to him, for spending every day with Claude, at home and in the hospital.
Visitation for Claude Bailey will be held today (Wednesday), March 16, 2011, in the J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, from 7-9 p.m. A celebration of his life will take place on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel, with Fr. Jake Andrea officiating.
