ALLEN, William T. and Ellen Mary – William T. Allen and Ellen Mary (Mulrooney) Byrne celebrated the sacrament of marriage at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist 67 years ago on June 26, 1941. They will celebrate a joint funeral mass in the same church and be laid to rest together in their beloved Newfoundland at 12:00 noon, Monday October 27, 2008.rnWilliam was born August 28, 1922 in St. John’s, the first son of William and Emma Allen. He died at home in Cranbrook, BC October 2, 2008. He worked as a cobbler and other miscellaneous jobs in St. John’s. During the Second World War, he and his family traveled to the New York State, USA where he worked on farms during the labor shortage of the war. He returned to Newfoundland in 1947, then moved west to Ontario where he worked in a puzzle factory. In 1956 he and his family made the long trek to British Columbia where he managed the farmlands of Saint Eugene’s Indian Mission near Cranbrook. In later years he worked in a local sawmill and retired in 1987. William was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman and thoroughly loved the rugged mountains of British Columbia. Ellen Mary was born April 12, 1923 in Great Paradise, Newfoundland to Douglas and Louisa Byrne. Louisa died shortly after Ellen Mary’s birth. Ellen Mary was raised by her uncle and aunt, Joe and Margaret Mulrooney in St. John’s and was known as Ellen Mary (Nellie) Mulrooney. She had many stories of growing up in St. John’s when life was much simpler than it is today. She learned a love of music and dance that followed her into her adult life. In Cranbrook she was active in the children’s programs at St. Mary’s Church. Later she was involved with the Senior Citizens Center, managing programs and performing with their musical group throughout the region. She was a prolific poet and was published often in the local newspaper. She died October 25, 2007 in Cranbrook. It was her wish that she and Bill be buried at Mount Carmel cemetery between her “Pop and Mom†Mulrooney.rnFour children survive them, Margaret Gunther of Wallace, Idaho; William and wife, Patricia, of Lacombe, AB; Elwin and wife Judith, of Kalispell, Montana; Douglas of Cranbrook; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. An infant daughter, Mary, preceded them in death.rnVisitation at Caul’s Funeral Home, 84 LeMarchant Road on Sunday, October 26th from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. with The Rosary scheduled at 7:30 p.m. rnMemorials made be made the to the charity of the donor’s choice. rn
