On March 14, 2011, Tommy passed away peacefully at the Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital, Ontario.
Born in Sydney Mines, Tommy was the son of Kathleen (Orrell) Capstick and the late William Capstick.
Tommy joined the armed forces in 1959 and served in Germany, Cyprus and throughout Europe. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Regiment. After serving 21 years in the military, he then worked for 20 years as a jail guard at the Middlesex Security Prison in London, Ont., until his retirement. He was also a longtime member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 176 Forest.
Tommy lived his life devoted to his family, he loved to spend time with his grandchildren and loved to travel. He spent winters in Florida and always loved to come back home to Cape Breton to visit his family, and especially to see his mother, who he truly adored and cherished with all his life.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mary (Leblanc); sons, Tommy (Tammy), Jason (Heidi) and Rene; grandchildren, Cory, Colin and Avery. He is also survived by sisters, Sheila (Bobby) Bradley, Kathy (Viv) and Mary Margaret MacIntyre (John); brothers, Kevin (Ann), Abby (Eileen), Michael (Kathy), Joey (Karen); brother-in-law, Cliffy MacIntyre; sister-in-law, Mary Capstick; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his father, Tommy was predeceased by his brother, John, mother and father-in-law, Georgina and Simon Leblanc, brothers in-law, John, David Leblanc and George Cholock.
A funeral mass was held at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, London, Ont. on Friday, March 18 at 11 a.m.
A memorial service will be held at St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines, on Thursday, March 24 at 10 a.m. with Fr. Thomas John officiating. Following the service, a reception will be held at St. Pius X Hall.
