Phyllis Wood

1920 - 2011 - Phyllis Evelyn Wood, 91, Moncton. It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of our dear Mother, Grammy, Aunt and friend, Phyllis Wood, on March, 26, 2011, in the Palliative Care Unit of The Moncton Hospital. Born January 30, 1920 to Harry and Myrtle (Dickinson) Carter of Carleton County, NB, she grew up in Woodstock, NB, as an accomplished student and role model for her two younger sisters and one younger brother. She graduated from Woodstock High School at the top of her class and began her career in the financial/insurance sector in Saint John, NB. She met her future husband, Ralph Wood, while working in an office at the family’s “Wood Block” on 11 Church Street, in Moncton. They were married in 1944 while Ralph was on leave between tours of duty in WWII and, after the war, they settled down as pioneer residents of Woodland Drive in Moncton’s Old West End. Although busy with raising three sons, Phyllis always found time to participate in many aspects of community life with Central United Church (Charter Member of the United Church Women), The United Way, The Moncton Women’s Curling Association, various bridge clubs, book clubs and many other endeavours. As her family matured, she re-entered the workforce, earning her real estate license and founding her own real estate agency, Wood Realty Limited, which she ran successfully for several years before joining Central Trust’s Real Estate Division. She also became a Fellow of the Real Estate Institute (FRI). She enjoyed her extended family, many friends, too many cats and was blessed with many happy years of retirement with Ralph in their beloved Old Bridge Park, in North Fort Myers, FL. A kind and loving person in every way, she will be dearly missed by all those who were fortunate enough to share her life’s journey. Phyllis is survived by: her three sons Bruce (Cindy), Greg (Marie-Thérèse) all of Moncton and Eric (Heather) of Halifax; her eight grandchildren Candice, Laura, Ryan, Alexander, Alicia, Trevor, Rebecca and Bryanna; her great grandson Jackson (Laura); her youngest sister Audrey MacPherson of Stratford, ON; Anne Wood of Riverview, NB; many nieces and nephews and their families, and; her special friend, Albert MacLean, of Moncton. She was predeceased by: her husband Ralph in 1996; her brother Malcom Carter (Victoria, BC) in 1992; her sister Dorothy Durling (Riverview, NB) in 2010, and; her nephews Gary Durling (Riverview, NB) and Clifford Carter (Nanaimo, BC) in 2009.
Visitations will be held at Fairhaven Funeral Home, 1177 Salisbury Road, Moncton, on Tuesday, March 29, from 2:00PM to 4:00PM and 7:00PM to 9:00PM. A funeral service will be held at Fairhaven on Wednesday, March 30 at 11:00AM with a reception to follow. Special thanks for the outstanding care and comfort given by the staffs of Camden Park Terrace, The Kenneth E. Spencer Memorial Home and The Moncton Hospital. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice or to The Lung Association, New Brunswick. On-line condolences can be made at: www.fairhavenmemorial.ca.
